Alana Massey cuts through cultural chaos with her essay "Against Chill." Anyone who made it through their twenties understands the dating culture prize of someone's chill factor, but what if "chill" is actually detached, uninvolved, and moronic?
What Massey gave me during this read is a reminder of the level of guts it takes to put real life experience on a page. In order to write authentically, someone has to reveal their point-of-view, which requires exposing something personal.
Imagining all of the chill bros that think showing any kind of concern is weak led me down a rabbit hole to Jonathan Franzen's feud with Oprah. Were you around for that one?
LOVELY BIT
“Because
Chill is the opposite of something else too: warmth. And kindness, and
earnestness, and vulnerability. And we need just enough of those things to
occasionally do something so remarkably unchill as fall in love."
